2017 Allsup High School Summer Academy Brings Young Entrepreneurs to Saint Louis University
The 2017 Allsup High School Entrepreneurship Summer Academy, hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship at the John Cook School of Business, kicks off July 24-28. This year’s group of high school students will have the opportunity to grow and learn from their peers, meet industry experts from the St. Louis community and collaborate with SLU faculty and staff.
This year’s keynote speaker is Mikaila Ulmer the founder and CEO of Me & the Bees Lemonade, an award-winning, natural lemonade with flaxseed and sweetened with honey. Mikaila is from Austin, Texas and is in sixth grade; she sold her award-winning lemonade from her lemonade stand for four years before being picked up by Whole Foods Market. Mikaila is determined to quench the thirst of her customers and inspire healthy habits, while educating families about the importance of honeybees and how to save them. She passionately facilitates workshops about honeybees and entrepreneurship, but most importantly, Mikaila donates 10% of the profits from the sale of her lemonade to organizations supporting these efforts.
A highlight to this year’s program will include site visits to creative, co-working spaces such as T-Rex and Tech Artista, and area restaurants to meet their founders. Past destinations have included Pi Pizzeria for a presentation by restauranteur Chris Sommers (B.S.B.A ‘98) and the Fountain on Locust to meet with founder Joy Grdnic. Additionally, students will hear from guest speakers who will share their experiences and advice.
While on campus, students will participate in a Kickstarter challenge, present elevator pitches, and will compete in a final challenge of pitching to a panel of professionals.
The Center for Entrepreneurship is offering a special 50 percent off discount to SLU employees for their children to attend. Scholarships are also available.
