dsc0003

The annual Allsup Entrepreneurship Academy hosted by the John Cook School of Business Center for Entrepreneurship begins Monday, July 27. High school students who are interested in entrepreneurship, and are eager to have a unique, hands-on experience this summer will have the opportunity to learn what it takes to start and operate a business, be their own bosses and have fun while doing it.

This year’s keynote speaker is Remmi Smith, the founder of Cook Time with Remmi, a cooking show aimed at getting kids excited about cooking, and to link the skill of cooking to improved nutrition. Remmi’s business idea stemmed from the current childhood obesity epidemic.  She works with executive chefs from 500 school districts in North America representing 3 million students. Her show airs on air on the international ifood.tv and foodytv.com platforms, and she has a segment on the local CBS affiliate in her hometown in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Remmi was named “Top 20 Entrepreneurs” of 2014 by Teen Business.

Activities include site visits to TechArtista, a coworking space in the Central West End, and lunch with entrepreneurs Chris Sommers of Pi Pizzeria and Joy Grdnic of Fountain on Locust.  Guest speakers will share their experiences and advice, including: Crystal Martin of LaunchCode, Khalia Collier of St. Louis Surge women’s basketball team, and Dawn Manske of Made for Freedom.

Academy students will participate in a Kickstarter challenge, present elevator pitches, and a final challenge of pitching to a panel of professionals. Faculty members and Cook School entrepreneurship students will mentor academy students throughout the week.

The academy offers students four entrepreneurship tracks that students can choose to study.
