Noted Speakers to Headline SLU Sports Business Symposium, “When Worlds Collide: The Impact of Social Media on Sports”
The annual event celebrates SLU’s sports business academic programs.

LOUIS - Saint Louis University’s John Cook School of Business will host the 2014 Sports Business Symposium, featuring a panel of sports business experts discussing “When Worlds Collide: The Impact of Social Media on Sports” on Tuesday, April 15, at John and Lucy Cook Hall, 3674 Lindell Blvd. at Spring Ave.
This year’s expert panelists and moderator include:
- Tom Ackerman (moderator), Sports Director, KMOX Radio
- Justin Blackman, Sponsorship Manager, 5-Hour Energy
- Gabe Lozano, Co-Founder and CEO of LockerDome.com
- Dr. Jimmy Sanderson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Clemson University
- Mike Sundet, Vice President, Sports & Entertainment Marketing and Advertising Services Anheuser-Busch InBev
The panelists will discuss the rise and influence of social media in sports, and the impact it has on athletes, fans and advertisers. A question and answer session with attendees and panelists will be part of the event.
The evening begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by program presentations at 7:15 p.m. The annual event, which celebrates SLU’s sports business academic programs, is free and open to the public and Saint Louis University community. About the Moderator and Pannelists
Moderator: Tom Ackerman (@Ackerman1120)
Tom Ackerman is Sports Director at KMOX, overseeing a department that serves as the flagship station for the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Blues. He is also the lead sports anchor on KMOX’s “Total Information A.M.” and a host on the Cardinals Radio Network.
In 16 years at KMOX, Mr. Ackerman has worked as a host, play-by-play announcer, anchor and reporter since beginning his career at the radio station in 1997. He’s interviewed the biggest names in sports, covering Super Bowls, World Series, All-Star Games and Final Fours. He’s traveled throughout the NFL, launching his career in 1999 with his extensive coverage of the Rams’ Super Bowl title.
Justin Blackman has worked in the sports and event marketing industry for 14 years both on the agency and brand side. Most recently he was Sponsorship Manager for 5-Hour Energy. Since graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1998, he has gained experience in public relations, field marketing, team, asset and brand management and contract negotiations. Mr. Blackman has worked with energy products for 9 years, overseeing sports and charity properties.

Gabe Lozano has spearheaded the rise of LockerDome, a social media platform built around what you like, as opposed to who you know. More than 20 million people per month use LockerDome to discover, collect, and engage around things they like with others that share the same passions. LockerDome has been called “Facebook on steroids” and a “future Wall Street darling” by MarketWatch, was named one of Forbes magazine’s “2013 Sports Names You Need to Know”, and labeled by Adweek as “in the sweet spot of the digital revolution.” Lozano is also the co-founder of GlobalHack, a non-profit organization that plans to award more than $1 million each year at quarterly hackathons and an annual product competition to better the St. Louis startup ecosystem.

Dr. Jimmy Sanderson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Clemson University. He is the author of How Social Media is Changing Sports: It’s A Whole New Ballgame published by Hampton Press. He maintains an active research agenda that explores the influence of social media on media, organizations, identity, and social/parasocial interaction, in the context of sports. He also is developing research that explores health and safety issues in sports. His research has appeared in outlets such as International Journal of Sport Communication, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Mass Communication and Society, Southern Communication Journal, and Western Journal of Communication.
Mike Sundet (@MSundet)
Mike Sundet is Vice President, Sports & Entertainment Marketing and Advertising Services for Anheuser-Busch InBev. He is responsible for all sports and entertainment marketing efforts at the company, including national sponsorships and programs. Prior to his current position, Mr. Sundet was Vice President of Bud Light Marketing, where he led all marketing efforts for the Bud Light family of brands. Mr. Sundet has also served as Brand Manager for the Michelob Ultra and Budweiser brands, as well as Senior Director of Innovation. A native of Columbia, MO, Mr. Sundet holds a Master’s Degree in Market Research from the University of Georgia, and a Bachelor’s in Business from Truman State University.
