Seung Hee Kim, Ph.D. is the department chairman as well as the Paul G. Lorenzini Endowed Professor of International Business. On Tuesday, May 17, a crowd of over 100 guests gathered in the Anheuser-Busch Auditorium in the John Cook School of Business to learn from an expert about “America’s Asian Pivot: Is it Real? Is it Sustainable?” The speaker, Dr. Ralph Cossa, pictured on the left, is President of Pacific Forum, a subsidiary of the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C.. Founded in 1975 and based in Honolulu, the Pacific Forum CSIS is a nonprofit, private, foreign policy research institute focused on the Asia-Pacific. It provides timely, informative, and innovative analysis of political, security, and strategic developments in the Asia-Pacific region. Pacific Forum’s Board of Governors is co-chaired by Richard L. Armitage, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, and Dr. Joseph S. Nye, Jr., former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs.
Undergraduate International Business Spotlight: For Tyler Burgess, It's Always A Good Time And Place For Networking
Tyler Burgess is an undergraduate student in the John Cook School of Business (JCSB) majoring in international business (IB) and marketing. He is fluent in French and conversational Croatian. While he doesn’t graduate until Summer 2016, he is already actively directing his global career. Burgess has completed three internships thus far. The most recent one was the summer of 2015 when he worked for The Foundry, a global software development firm based in London. Burgess is shown in the photo to the left overlooking the River Thames.
International Business Board Spotlight: New CEO of the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership is Ready for the Next Phase of Growth
Sheila Sweeney is a native St. Louisan. Interested in politics from a young age, she worked as an intern for Senator Eagleton and as a legal aide in the Missouri Senate. This led to a career with Citibank as a lobbyist in 49 states. She also started her own company, SM Sweeney & Company, through which she specialized in transactions for property assemblage and commercial and industrial development for private investors, corporations, and individuals. Throughout her career, she remained involved with civic operations. Sweeney was the chair of the St. Louis County Economic Council from 2005 to 2013. This County Council was merged with the economic development agency for the City of St. Louis in 2013 to form the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership (SLEDP).
Each year, the Boeing Institute of International Business offers a global outlook conference with a networking breakfast as well as exhibitors, a morning program with several key speakers, and a seated lunch with a luncheon presentation. The 2016 program was held Friday, November 20, in the Busch Student Center Ballrooms at Saint Louis University. The annual program attracted more than 300 registrants. The following summarizes the morning speakers. To highlight the outstanding students studying international business, each speaker was introduced by students representing the different international business degree programs in the school.
Student Scholars and Global Business Leaders Recognized at 2015 Hussmann International Business Awards
On Thursday evening, October 8, the Boeing Institute of International Business in the John Cook School of Business sponsored the annual Hussmann International Business Awards Ceremony. During the evening, three area executives received awards for their eﬀorts to advance international trade in the region. Eight undergraduate students studying international business also received scholarships. The event concluded with a celebratory reception.
On Thursday, June 4, Seung Kim, Ph.D., director of the Boeing Institute of International Business at Saint Louis University’s John Cook School of Business, was presented with the 2015 International Educator of the Year award by the World Affairs Council of St. Louis. “This is the first year that the World Affairs Council of St. Louis is awarding the International Educator of the Year,” stated Robert A. Fischer, executive director, World Affairs Council of St. Louis. “It couldn’t be given to a more deserving individual than Dr. Seung H. Kim, who has led the global education initiative in the Saint Louis region for several decades.”
On Tuesday, June 2, Andy Taylor, executive chairman of Enterprise Holdings, shared his insights about “The Enterprise Way – Building A Global Culture of Customer Service” as part of the 2015 Boeing Distinguished Guest Lecture in International Business. Over 400 reservations were accepted for the event, which was held in the Anheuser-Busch auditorium in Cook Hall at Saint Louis University’s John Cook School of Business. Dr. Seung Kim, director of the Boeing Institute of International Business that hosts the annual event, opened the program and served as moderator. After welcoming the record crowd, he introduced the Saint Louis University Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Ellen Harshman, who provided a university greeting. The welcome from the Cook School of Business, and the introduction of Mr. Taylor, were provided by the Dean, Dr. Mark Higgins.
