On a whim, I reached out to Dr. Jerry Katz, an incredibly impactful SLU professor, one of the most intriguing people I’ve ever known, and a resource I would occasionally call on in a moment of crisis (“Dr. Katz, I have an interview with Bear Stearns in NYC next week--what’s the best way to travel with a suit...and should I wear a pocket square?”).A few years of hustling in New York City for Bear Stearns and Goldman Sachs created in me a desire to find a way to connect with...something. Something from my past. My “roots,” for lack of a better term. In other words, I wanted to do that proverbial “giving back” thing so often touted, not so often executed.I considered everything from being a Big Brother to coaching youth basketball. Neither of which seemed to work with my schedule: gym by 5:30 a.m., office by 7 a.m. home by 7 p.m. (on a good day).
